The University of Michigan Library seeks a Director of Development to provide leadership for Library fundraising activities. As a preeminent research library, we are an essential partner in advancing the University's research and teaching mission. The Director of Development reports to the University Librarian and Dean of Libraries and collaborates closely with other members of the Library's leadership to raise our visibility in transforming the way libraries organize, preserve, and share access to knowledge.
Position Description
The Director of Development works both independently and collaboratively, directing the planning, organization, and implementation of comprehensive fundraising programs for the University Library. This position manages the budget and staff of the Library's Development Office, plans and directs the University Library's participation in University fundraising campaigns and coordinates those activities with other University-wide fundraising programs.
The Director of Development is responsible for personal solicitation of major, planned and capital gifts, as well as for planning and directing the cultivation and solicitation of prospects by the Dean. The primary focus will be on identifying and building the base of major gift prospects capable of gifts of $100,000 and more. This position also has oversight for annual giving, development-related communication, donor-related cultivation events, and stewardship. The Director of Development conceives and implements strategies for the Library's prospects as well as identifies and pursues prospects for capital campaign gifts. Staff includes two development generalists, administrative support, and the ability to draw on other Library staff as needed.
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities
* Manage a portfolio of major gift prospects and donors, with an emphasis on gifts of $100,000 and above.
* Identify, access, analyze and conceive appropriate strategies for approaching prospects and making the vitally important selection of the appropriate donor interest match with focus areas within the University Library. Specifically, this includes short- and long-term planning of solicitations and the analysis of prospects with respect to size of ask, areas of interest, timing of solicitations and identification of compelling needs within the University Library.
* Plan and direct the solicitation of prospects by the Dean and other university and development leadership as appropriate (President, Vice President for Development).
* Collaborate with Associate University Librarians and other library leadership to initiate and manage gifts and donor relationships.
* Engage with library staff to develop an understanding of library activities and emerging trends, and to match library needs with development opportunities, and to help Library staff become more effective in development activities.
* Provide executive staff support to the Dean as related to fundraising activities including strategic planning for Dean's fundraising travel, providing briefing materials for meetings and visits, and drafting correspondence.
* Oversee the annual giving appeals and stewardship program for the University Library. Lead all efforts to coordinate on behalf of the University Library by various departments within the Office of University Development.
* Assist the Dean in developing and engaging a national fundraising group.
* Direct University Library donor and cultivation events.
* Maintain central UM electronic files for all prospects, generate thank you letters, initiate and maintain communication (written and verbal) with prospects and donors.
* Provide regular data analyses and written reports for library leadership on development progress and activities.
* Manage library development staff, providing leadership; mentoring; appropriate training; and setting and evaluating individual goals.
* Maintain connections with the Office of University Development. Meet regularly with the OUD leadership to work on prospect strategy and discuss progress against objectives. Be full participant in the University development community, attending monthly Development Council meetings and take advantage of professional development workshops, training and professional gatherings.
* Represent the University Library and the University at designated functions as required.
* Other projects as assigned.
Required Qualifications
* Bachelor's degree required, advanced degree preferred.
* Five or more years of progressively responsible fundraising experience in an academic fundraising setting with a comprehensive development program is required; experience in fundraising for significant capital projects, experience in volunteer leadership, management, recruitment and organization, and experience in a comprehensive campaign at a multi-faceted institution is preferred. Must possess a record of successful fundraising activities.
* Excellent collaboration skills and proven ability to communicate and work effectively with diverse constituents, preferably in a university setting, including university development officers, development officers in other schools and colleges, university departments and other external partners.
* Exceptional personal integrity, strong interpersonal skills, creative, flexible, organized, self-motivated, with good planning and follow-through.
* Demonstrated leadership ability to develop strategic plans, implement programs, organize, initiate, and motivate.
* Proven success in gift closure at the five-and six-figure level.
* Excellent communication and presentation skills, both written and oral.
* Considerable experience in marketing, advertising, public relations or a related field.
* Ability and willingness to travel, as well as to work outside the normal workday.
* Ability to work effectively and collegially within a culturally diverse environment.
Preferred Qualifications
* Knowledge of University of Michigan policies, procedures, and cultures.
* Knowledge of research library collections, facilities, and services.
* Knowledge of trusts, bequests, and financial management programs; knowledge of foundations and other funding agencies.
* Considerable knowledge of investments, tax law and accounting terminology.
