Position Description

The Director of the Annual Fund will work closely with the Chief Development Officer to provide broad oversight, leadership, strategic direction and creativity for the Stephen M. Ross School of Business Annual Fund team. This position will manage the annual fund effort through increasing annual fund participation and revenue across the entire alumni base.

The Director will oversee the annual fund organization, including solicitation and retention of current annual fund donors, acquisition of new annual fund donors, and increasing the annual fund revenue. This position will be charged with the coordination of communication efforts (including direct mail, electronic mail, web interfaces and multi-media), class campaigns, and other initiatives designed to increase both donor participation and revenue for the annual fund.

This position reports directly to the Chief Development Officer and supervises any regular and temporary staff involved in annual fund projects. This position requires the ability to travel occasionally to represent the Ross School of Business.

The Office of Development and Alumni Relations drives the fundraising and alumni relations activities of the Stephen M. Ross School of Business.

The Ross School's contribution to the University's most recent comprehensive campaign, ending in December of 2008, totaled $360 million - including $160 million for academic support, $110 million for facilities, and $96 million in unrestricted support.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities

Annual Fund Management
> Oversee and manage all aspects of the School's Annual Fund program.
> Direct and manage major donor and annual giving programs.
> Cultivate donor relationships and steward leadership of annual gift donors; increase annual giving to the School through the building of the alumni network base.
> Provide staffing and support for key volunteers including boards, advisory committees and campaign volunteers.
> Oversee and coordinate all staff recruitment within management areas.
> Develop and implement creative fundraising goals, strategies, and measurable benchmarks.
> Develop an annual fund branding strategy and alumni affairs branding strategy coordination with the Chief Development Officer, the Director of Alumni Affairs and the leadership of the Alumni Affairs and Development Team.
> Create strategies to use volunteers and other structures to increase annul fund revenue.
> Determine and implement ways to structure annual fund efforts and team members to increase annual fund solicitation effectiveness and revenue.

Coordination of Development Efforts
> Develop, oversee and implement annual fund policies, procedures, and guidelines in compliance with overall University standards.
> In coordination with the Chief Development Officer, represent School's Annual Fund interests to central development, including serving on University development committees and special task forces as required.
> Leverage services offered by the University's Central annual fund team to increase revenue.
> Act as a liaison to the School's Office of Student Life to coordinate student-driven annual giving and alumni relations programs.

Gift Solicitation
> Manage a modest portfolio of major and principal gift prospects.
> Develop key cultivation and solicitation strategies for annual fund donors.
> Participate in donor discovery and qualification as travel and time permits.

Other Duties
> Act as member of Development and Alumni Relations management team and work collaboratively with Chief Development Officer and other colleagues to promote department success.
> Manage budget for annual fund program.
> Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

> Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience is necessary.
> Reasonable experience (typically five or more years of professional experience) in fundraising, marketing, advertising, public relations, communications or a related field is necessary.
> Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required. Some experience in writing and public speaking is necessary.
> Occasional travel (both domestically and internationally) is required. Travel is anticipated to be at least one trip per month.
> Occasional work on evenings and weekends to travel or support events is required.
> Successful demonstration of initiative, organizational skills, leadership skills, team orientation and commitment to customer service.
> Proven ability to successfully interact with a diverse group of people.
> Ability to work independently and to exercise initiative.
> Strong computer skills, particularly in Microsoft Office environment.
> Ability to perform multiple projects simultaneously with attention to detail and deadlines. Superior written and verbal communication skills are required.
> Professional demeanor and presentation.

Preferred Qualifications

> Demonstrated ability to design, direct and manage significant program initiatives is strongly preferred.
> Some experience in fundraising is very desirable, especially proven success in at least one of the following areas: alumni relations, development, public relations, volunteer management, events management or program management.
> Knowledge of University policies, rules and regulations.
> Familiarity with database and website management.
> Demonstrated managerial and team leadership skills are preferred.
