Position Description

The Director of Alumni Affairs will work closely with the Chief Development Officer to create, direct and manage the annual strategic plan, objectives, timelines and evaluations for the Alumni Affairs Program focused on engaging Ross alumni worldwide. This position implements programs and provides direction to alumni volunteers to strengthen the alumni club network. The Director of Alumni Affairs will integrate alumni club strategies with annual giving participation strategies, serve as a liaison to faculty and staff traveling on behalf of Development and Alumni Relations, and provide appropriate briefings and support.

This position reports directly to the Chief Development Officer and supervises any regular and temporary staff involved in alumni affairs including global outreach and club projects. This position requires the ability to travel to alumni events domestically and internationally to represent the Ross School of Business.

The Office of Development and Alumni Relations drives the fundraising and alumni relations activities of the Stephen M. Ross School of Business.

The Ross School's contribution to the University's most recent comprehensive campaign, ending in December of 2008, totaled $360 million - including $160 million for academic support, $110 million for facilities, and $96 million in unrestricted support.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities

Develop and Implement Ross Alumni Global Outreach Program
> Create and implement a comprehensive strategy to engage alumni internationally as members of a vibrant and active alumni community.
> Through development of a strategic plan, build a brand that encourages alumni to maintain connections to the school. Create easy points of entry during the various stages of the alumni life cycle to increase alumni participation.
> Recruit, manage and train new volunteers and current club contacts.
> Plan and promote international club events and lead development of associated marketing materials through the development of annual plans for all Ross Alumni Clubs.
> Serve as liaison to faculty and staff traveling internationally on behalf of the Office of Development & Alumni Relations.
> Serve as primary contact to largest international regions including: Southeast Asia, India, Europe and South America.
> Travel periodically to international regions to provide direct support to alumni volunteers.
> Serve as international liaison to the UM Alumni Association and coordinate any joint events and activities.
> Provide staffing to the leadership of the Ross School Alumni Board of Governors (ABOG) including meeting scheduling, agenda development, communication, and correspondence. Collaborate with the Chief Development Officer to provide briefing materials, coordination, and strategic planning for the Dean in preparation for ABOG meetings and other board engagement opportunities.
> Serve as a liaison to the ABOG Clubs Committee and provide briefings and updates to the committee chair.

Direct Effort to Develop Domestic Alumni Club Tradition
> Prepare action plans and timelines for alumni clubs. Recruit alumni, manage relationships and train club leaders and regional contacts. Plan and promote club events and regional activities. Develop written and electronic communications for club and regional activities.
> Manage relationships with four large domestic clubs including: New York, Chicago, Los Angeles and San Francisco.
> Supervise Assistant Director, Alumni Affairs, and work together to create a comprehensive approach to alumni engagement through international and domestic clubs.
> Recruit faculty participation in domestic club events and manage relations between the clubs and faculty.
> Work with Development & Alumni Relations colleagues and web development team to develop and promote online services for alumni clubs.
> Direct, manage and facilitate Leadership Workshop for alumni club leaders.
> Coordinate events and activities with other Ross School of Business or UM Alumni Association programs and serve as liaison to the University of Michigan Alumni Association.
> Evaluate the success and effectiveness of the alumni club program.

Other Duties
> Act as member of Development and Alumni Relations management team and work collaboratively with Chief Development Officer and other colleagues to promote department success.
> Manage budget for Global Alumni Outreach Program and Alumni Clubs.
> Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

> Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience is necessary.
> Reasonable experience (typically five or more years of professional experience) in fundraising, marketing, advertising, public relations, communications or a related field is necessary.
> Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required. Some experience in writing and public speaking is necessary.
> Extensive travel (both domestically and internationally) is required. Travel is anticipated to be at least two trips per month.
> Occasional work on evenings and weekends to travel or support events is required.
> Successful demonstration of initiative, organizational skills, leadership skills, team orientation and commitment to customer service.
> Proven ability to successfully interact with a diverse group of people.
> Ability to work independently and to exercise initiative.
> Strong computer skills, particularly in Microsoft Office environment.
> Ability to perform multiple projects simultaneously with attention to detail and deadlines. Superior written and verbal communication skills are required.
> Professional demeanor and presentation.

Preferred Qualifications

> Demonstrated ability to design, direct and manage significant program initiatives is strongly preferred.
> Some experience in fundraising is very desirable, especially proven success in at least one of the following areas: alumni relations, development, public relations, volunteer management, events management or program management.
> Knowledge of University policies, rules and regulations.
> Familiarity with database and website management.
> Demonstrated managerial and team leadership skills are preferred.
