Position Description

The Senior Director of Development's primary responsibility is the identification, cultivation and solicitation of major gifts from individual prospects capable of making gifts of $50,000 to $100,000 or more. The Director will develop and drive fund-raising strategies to secure gifts from alumni and friends to support Alumni Association Club Scholarships, LEAD Scholarships, Camp Michigania, the Office of Financial Aid and other priorities agreed upon by the Alumni Association and Office of University Development. Frequent travel is required (averaging 50%).

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities

Primary Fundraising Activities for AAUM (45%)
*Advance individual relationships that result in philanthropic contributions:
*Identify and qualify a portfolio of prospects with capacity to make gifts of $25,000 and above.
*Manage a select group of prospects capable of giving $100,000 or more.
*Develop and implement strategies designed to realize the current and future giving potential of individual prospects.
*Ensure consistent and appropriate contact, facilitate or make solicitations, and ensure effective stewardship.
*Gain a comprehensive understanding of Camp Michigania and other AAUM priorities, making a persuasive verbal and written case for supporting key programs and projects and effectively matching the interests of prospects to these specific needs.
*Serve as a scholarship facilitator for the local alumni clubs, assisting them in successfully initiating and expanding alumni club sponsored scholarships in a manner that is consistent with University policy and sound fundraising principles.
*Develop and manage an infrastructure that results in a sustainable giving program for the AAUM.
*Direct the annual solicitation of the board and other Association-specific constituent groups and personally solicit members of those groups as appropriate.
*Create and manage appropriate AAUM development committee(s).
*Provide direction for stewardship for Alumni Association donors; coordinate stewardship for Alumni Club and individual scholarship donors with the OUD Assistant Director, Scholarship Stewardship.
*Develop and implement a promotion plan for AAUM fundraising priorities in coordination with the marketing and communications office.
*Provide direct supervision of the Director for Development, LEAD Scholars and help set fundraising expectations and goals for recruitment of under-represented minorities.
*Provide direct supervision for Annual Giving and Stewardship Coordinator, setting and monitoring annual performance objectives and providing mentorship.

Primary Fundraising Activities for Alumni Club and University Wide Scholarships (45%)
*Advance individual relationships that result in philanthropic contributions:
*Identify and qualify a portfolio of prospects with capacity to make gifts of $50,000 and above.
*Manage a select group of prospects capable of giving $100,000 or more.
*Develop and implement strategies designed to realize the current and future giving potential of individual prospects.
*Ensure consistent and appropriate contact, facilitate or make solicitations.
*Gain a comprehensive understanding of the case for Alumni Club and university wide scholarships making a persuasive verbal and written case for support of these programs.
*Collaborate with the OUD Assistant Director, Scholarship Stewardship to provide effective stewardship for OFA donors.
*In coordination with the OUD Assistant Director, Scholarship Stewardship, act as a liaison to the Office of Financial Aid on behalf of the Alumni Association and the Office of the Vice President for Development.

Collaborative Activities in Support of AAUM and OUD Goals (10%)
*Participate as a member of the AAUM and OUD teams, including attending regular team meetings and special meetings, as appropriate.
*Meet with colleagues across campus to coordinate and execute strategies, using experience and knowledge to resolve conflicts and build consensus. Develop and maintain relationships with faculty, administrators, and staff volunteers associated with his/her portfolios/programs.
*Work closely with OUD Office of Gift Planning to close planned gifts for scholarships, Camp Michigania, and other Alumni Association priorities with an understanding of the principles and techniques associated with planned giving and financial and estate planning.
*Participate in and support other Alumni Association programs, activities and events with special attention given to the identification and cultivation of donors and donor prospects
*Work on committees and projects where development expertise is needed, i.e. Distinguished Alumni Service Award.
*Set priorities for multiple short-term and long-term projects based on goals
*Provide appropriate and effective reporting of activity and monitor resources and expenditures associated with his/her program and portfolio.
*Gather, update, record and properly store information about prospects and donors utilizing the University's donor and alumni tracking database

Supervises directly: Director of Development, LEAD Scholars (AAUM), Annual Giving and Stewardship Coordinator, and Senior Program Assistant

*Perform other duties as required or assigned.

Required Qualifications

*A baccalaureate degree is required
*5 to 7 years of successful fundraising experience (closing $50,000+ gifts).
*Excellent communications skills coupled with strong writing and presentation skills
*Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues in a team environment
*Demonstrated track record of recruiting motivating, organization and directing the work of volunteer leaders. Strong consensus building and group leadership skills.
*Discretion and an ability to interact with donors and the ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality
*Comfort with personal computers and software programs for retrieving, organizing and researching appropriate donor/prospect information, as well as data gathering and manipulation
*An ability and willingness to quickly learn the University's history, mission, demographics, faculty, current programs, departments, etc., as well as the University culture to be able to persuasively articulate how Michigan distinguishes itself from peer institutions
*Strong interpersonal skills are required, both written and oral, as well as a high level of sophistication and maturity in social and professional settings

*Close familiarity with and commitment to higher education
*Experience in a comprehensive fundraising campaign
