The Raise

Generations of Black Excellence

The Raise: Generations of Black Excellence is a network of donors working to make an impact at the University of Michigan. Founded in 2020 by Michigan alumna Brandi Hudson ’01, The Raise holds the mission to advocate for Black students, staff, and faculty at U-M by centering those individuals’ experiences in developing programs and activities open to all. Its goals are to:
  • Diversify the student body on campus
  • Increase representation of different perspectives on boards across campus
  • Increase Black philanthropic engagement with U-M as a community

Looking back on the history of accomplishments by alumni and community, as well as toward the future contributions of incoming students, The Raise aims to instill a sense of intergenerational responsibility and foster enduring networks of support and giving.

Executive Committee

Recognizing the impact of philanthropy in influencing the university's efforts, The Raise seeks to leverage individual philanthropy as a vehicle to elevate the needs of the Black community at U-M and advance societal change through programming and activities open to all. Each executive leadership committee member participates in bi-annual meetings to shape specific goals and initiatives, serve as ambassadors for U-M, and help increase donor support from the Black community in particular.

Community Leader & Advocate

Brandi Hudson joined the Bay Area Campaign Leadership Council and the Bay Area Next Gen Council in 2017, igniting her passion and commitment to her alma mater. Throughout her involvement to support U-M, Hudson has worked to increase the diversity of perspectives, including via Black donors, represented on Michigan’s volunteer boards. The Raise leverages philanthropy as an activist strategy, with the mindset that giving through the community ensures that the community’s priorities are supported, and helping to pave the way for current and future Black students, among others, at Michigan.

“The history of Black philanthropy shows us that community is a central tenet to how we engage in giving. We give to provide access to the community. This sentiment is truly at the heart of The Raise: Generations of Black Excellence.”
