After earning his GED and getting accepted to Michigan, Derek Moreno (AB ’24) found himself overwhelmed with the prospect of paying for college. Although he was determined to find a way, scholarship support from LSA made a huge impact. “I don’t think I would have been able to attend the University of Michigan without the LSA scholarship,” he said.

An English major who loves to cook, Moreno said both fiction and food have taken him on unexpected journeys and taught him to adapt in life. In high school, Moreno didn’t get much encouragement to go to college—let alone “one of the best universities in the United States. But yet, here I am, and I wouldn’t trade it for the world,” he said. “I like to think I represent the people who never knew this could be a possibility.”
