For more than 20 years, the University of Michigan has honored its most dedicated fundraising volunteers with the David B. Hermelin Award for Fundraising Volunteer Leadership. Established in 2004, this prestigious award celebrates the memory of David Hermelin (BBA ’58, HLLD ’00)—a devoted alumnus, Detroit-area entrepreneur, philanthropist, and former U.S. ambassador to Norway. Known for his charm, exuberance, and ability to bring people together, David’s legacy continues to inspire U‑M’s strong tradition of philanthropy.

The Hermelin Award is U‑M’s highest recognition for fundraising volunteers—alumni and friends who, inspired by David’s example, have helped raise funds for schools, colleges, and units; served on fundraising committees; rallied others to join the cause; and hosted events that advance the university’s mission.

During the annual awards ceremony held on campus on Oct. 17, university leaders celebrated the lasting impact of these volunteers, whose service and generosity make U‑M’s excellence and ambition possible.

Here are this year’s recipients:

Wayee Chu

Wayee Chu

San Francisco, California

Wayee Chu (AB ’97) has been an exceptional fundraising volunteer for Michigan, engaging across multiple units, including UMMA, LSA, and AAUM, since 2020. She actively participates in several leadership roles, such as on the Bay Area Campaign Council, AAUM Look to Michigan Campaign Council, and the UMMA Leadership Board. Wayee, who skillfully leverages her network for the university’s benefit, is known for her dynamic approach, frequently reaching out to U‑M’s development staff with connections, ideas, and opportunities, often “coloring outside the lines” to engage with various campus leaders.

Richard Burns

Richard Burns and Elizabeth Murphy Burns

Cave Creek, Arizona

Richard Burns (AB ’68, JD ‘71) has dedicated over 50 years to volunteer fundraising for the Law School, while his late wife Elizabeth (d. April 2025), a devoted philanthropist, equally supported Michigan’s programs and built lasting relationships within the university community. Richard has led numerous initiatives, such as the Alumni Reunion Program and the Victors for Michigan Campaign, and together with Elizabeth, championed causes like the Women of the Class of ’71 Scholarship Fund. Their efforts have made them impactful university ambassadors, inspiring individuals across age groups to donate to Michigan.

Donald Shepard

Donald Shepherd

Rancho Santa Fe, California

Donald R. Shepherd’s (BBA ‘58) commitment spans decades, during which he established 37 endowments primarily supporting scholarships in Athletics, the Michigan Marching Band, the Office of Financial Aid, and Musical Theatre. Over the years, his guidance and leadership have elevated the stature and capabilities of programs he passionately believes in, particularly within women’s athletics and the Michigan Marching Band. His early support of these areas positioned him ahead of his time, and his behind-the-scenes efforts inspired others to give as well. Don’s enduring enthusiasm and strategic giving serve as a model for impactful philanthropy.
